Maya Angelou "Alone"
Mrs. Baker
The masterpiece you will be reading about is "Alone" Maya Angelou, 1975 wrote in a book called "Oh Pray My Wings Are Gone Fit Me" that consist of 36 poems. This poem is about not being able to make it in this world. Everybody needs somebody to make it even If it's God or friends, family somebody in your corner. "Alone" starts off with our speaker doing some serious soul-searching. She's feeling pretty isolated, but she thinks she just might have come up with an answer to her problems: people need community in order to get by. As it turns out, money won't buy you happiness. Even the very, very rich get lonely. So, don't try to make more money. Make friends instead. Our speaker fashions herself into something like a prophet, warning the "race of man" that things aren't about to get any easier anytime soon. The solution is (all together now….) to realize that no one can make it on their own! This is a poem and it speaks to a lot of people in the world. Maya Angelou was the voice of hundreds of thousands of people who had no voice she is a very smart inspirational women.
"Alone" by Maya Angelou is a masterpiece because it connects to the immediate past, specifically the 1930's-1970's, it moves the audience after viewing seeing or hearing feel happy some sad, some informed. This is the work of artist genius she has won many prizes and awards and has many fans.
The immediate past in Alone is the 1930's. During that time there was racism and segregation especially in the south. Although many racial problems occurred, the Scottsborro Boys, Trial and Defense campaign was one that happened. Blackpast.org says that "nine young black men falsely accused of raping two white women on board at a train near Scottsboro, Alabama in 1931. Convicted and facing execution succeeded in both racism and American legal system and overturning the conviction. The sentencing was to be called injustice and they did not have a lot of evidence against the young men. The jury was also all white people and of course they thought they did it. They were treated unfairly and sentenced death because of a conflict on a trial between blacks and whites during that time of racism. Since things like this happened in the world during the 1930's. Angelou looked at things like this and had feelings toward it. In her poem she said "The race of a man is suffering and I can hear the moan, cause nobody But nobody can make it out here alone (Angelou). Angelou was born in St. Louis Missouri so she would have seen how men and women African American of course. She was born in the 1920's, so she knows how bad racism was and she was around when it was happening. She maybe had to deal with racism herself and she probably knew of the Scottsborro case and she may have heard their sorrow and felt the pain.
Furthermore," Alone" communicates to the immediate past of the 1930's by illustrating life in southern states. For instance in 1934 a group of whites and blacks came together to form a union the southern tenants farmers union to be exact (STFU). Blackpast. org says "the STFU was formed to protest the eviction of twenty-three farming families on a plantation, but grew inscope to fight generally for the rights of share choppers, tenant farmers and farm laborers. By 1936 the union had spreads to Texas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Oakland over 30,000 members in 300 separate locals. The union was meant to protect the laborers that work on farms and they helped families stay where they live and work. They were harassed but they still helped people to keep their homes. They had rallies and meetings and built successful unions and fought for the rights of people and their farms. In fact STFU relates to what Angelou is saying . Angelou says that nobody can make it alone . Angelou states that "Alone", all alone nobody, but nobody can make it out here alone." Angelou says that nobody can make it alone, so the STFU chose to come together, blacks and whites, on the south came together. They made a change in other people lives as a union a whole not alone.
"Alone" moves the audience after viewing, seeing, or hearing feeling happy, some sad, some informed. A lot of people who read the works of Angelou are really impressed and they love them. For instance, the reviews on good read.com were nothing but happy, and sad responses because a lot of her work lifts people spirit up and makes them really think, some opens peoples eyes and it speaks to them and it's sad to them others are informed by the things that she says and writes about. Angelou is the type of writer who can make you sad and happy all at the same time. I was reading her work I did feel like she was right and I was happy. I thought about it but I was sad because honestly a lot of the time I do feel alone myself so I can relate to other people with their emotions. In fact, I chose the poem because it really spoke to me. A stanza that stood out the me was the first stanza. Angelou says "Lying, thinking Last night How to find my soul a home where water is not thirsty And bread was is not stone I came with one thing And I don't believe I'm wrong that nobody can make it out there alone." This stanza to me means that how can my heart go somewhere where it is okay. Somewhere it won't be hurt and it won't cry and nobody will leave me alone. It means that nobody can make it alone so I will need someone to help, my heart will not survive alone.

In addition Angelou honors include, Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award, three Grammys, served on two presidential committees, awarded National Medal of Act, and the presidential medal of Freedom.
